From the Principal

Welcome to the first edition of Newstead College eNews! We look forward to sharing stories of student successes, college events and key information and more with you through this newsletter, which will be delivered straight to your inbox on a regular basis.

Term 3 was a jam-packed and exciting time for our college, with events like our production of Cinderella and College Ball offering opportunities to socialise and celebrate alongside study time and exam preparation. Please enjoy a wrap-up of additional term highlights below.

Wishing everyone a safe and restful holiday break.  We look forward to welcoming everyone back for Term 4.

Brad Cottam, Acting Principal

College Ball

Newstead College students and staff had a brilliant time at the College Ball, held at the Hotel Grand Chancellor.

Dressed in their best, everyone had fun socialising, snapping pics and hitting the dance floor. The great food, groovy lights, and non-stop bangers made for an awesome evening all-round.

A massive thank you to Amelia, the SRC, and everyone who made the night one to remember!

College Market

The Caff was alive with entrepreneurial spirit on Wednesday as students showcased their creativity and business skills at the Newstead College Market Day. This year’s event featured 24 student-run micro businesses, with all proceeds going to charity SPEAK UP! Stay ChatTY.

Stalls included 16 food businesses serving brownies, arancini balls, homemade pasta, tiramisu and much more, as well as a variety of businesses offering products such as laser-cut wood items, jams, 3D printed objects, lolly bags, cosmetics and slushies. Attendees also enjoyed live music by our amazing student bands Sunset Vibes and Midpoint.

The Market Day provides students with valuable real-world experience in business management, teamwork and marketing. It was a tremendous success, thanks to AST and Support Group Coordinator Susan, as well as all students and staff who contributed!

MUSIC

Rock Challenge - Heats

We are incredibly proud of NC Music students who gave epic performances in the Tasmanian Rock Challenge northern heats.

Acoustic performers Will and April performed amazing original songs, and Imogen’s standout skill and charisma got her through to the State Finals. Sunset Vibes (Jayde, Ella, Darcy, Kobi and Ryan) and Midpoint (Imogen, Kobi, Ryan and Will) both put on incredible shows and the crowd couldn’t get enough.  Well done to these students for bringing together skills from various subjects and years of musical practice to make their performances unforgettable.

Finals

Imogen was phenomenal at the State Final of the Tasmanian Rock Challenge acoustic section.

Despite some nerves, she applied her feedback from the previous week’s northern heats and delivered an incredibly strong, smooth, and soulful performance of her two original songs. When the winners were announced, Imogen was recognised as a highly commendable artist.

What a fantastic showcase of an up-and-coming singer, songwriter and performer. We’re so proud!

Junction Arts Festival

Newstead College student bands Sunset Vibes and Midpoint performed at the Junction Arts Festival on Sunday 23 September as part of Youngtion. Both rocked the stage and gave energetic, professional-level performances. Music teacher Vince closed out the festival with the Bad Dad Orchestra to a packed, enthusiastic crowd. So much NC talent on display!

Maths Relay

Team Newstead, including Eason, Caden, Charlotte, and Ella, participated in the Maths Relay competition and achieved 2nd place in the senior division! They competed against 8 teams from LC, Scotch Oakburn, and St Patrick's College.

Great work from our students!

HASS

LawFest

Our Legal Studies 2 and 3 students had a fantastic day at UTAS' LawFest on 6 September.

After an early bus ride to Hobart, they joined peers from around the state for insightful presentations by experts such as Prof Tim McCormack, Dr Matt Killingsworth, Prof Jeremy Prichard and Hon Michael Kirby. Topics discussed included key legal issues such as the global rules-based order and law reform in Tasmania. Students had the chance to explore the campus and chat with university law students.  The day wrapped up with presentations by Regina Weiss and Rowena McDonald, who offered valuable insights into challenges in youth justice.

It was a long but enriching day, leaving our students more informed and inspired for their future careers.

Legal Studies

The Legal Studies classes were lucky to have Justine from Tasmania Police come in for a chat last week.  Topics of conversation ranged from how to enter the police force, and career pathways and roles within the force, through to the Youth Justices Act, restorative justice practices diverting youth from court, home detention, drug crime and domestic violence.  Justine had many stories and experiences to share that helped students gain a better insight into a pathway that could come from studying Legal Studies at Newstead College.

TA Appreciation Week

Newstead College is deeply grateful for our Teacher Assistants who go above and beyond to support students’ learning and wellbeing every day of the school year.

We were delighted to invite these individuals to a celebratory morning tea during Australian Teacher Aide (Assistant) Appreciation Week, 1-5 September, catered for by the amazing Line 5 Food and Hospitality team.

Thank you to the following people for your dedication, kindness and unwavering commitment and for making Newstead College a better place for everyone.

RYDA excursion

As part of the Driving for Jobs course at Newstead, 20 Grade 11, 12 and 13 students attended the RYDA (Rotary Youth Driver Awareness) Day at Symmons Plains on Wednesday 18 September. All students currently have either their Learner or P1 licence.

RYDA is a ‘community safety initiative delivering practical road safety information targeting attitude and awareness of young drivers and passengers’. Some of the sessions students attended were:

  • Road safety features of cars (airbags, ABS, tyres, crumple zones etc).
  • Vehicle stopping distances (practical demonstration) which opened a few eyes!
  • Road crash statistics – did you know Learner drivers are the least likely to have a crash, experienced drivers are next, and that P1 and P2 drivers are the most likely!
  • A guest speaker who lives with an acquired brain injury as the result of a serious vehicle crash.

Chicken Hatching

To complement their theoretical investigations into reproductive processes, Biology 2 students engaged with the realities of embryo development by incubating and hatching four dozen chicken eggs.

“Only about half of them hatched, but since we didn't know if all the eggs were fertilised, we can't really judge the results," said Teacher Kaija.

“Overall, it was an exciting way to learn about how chicken embryos develop, and it gave us a cool comparison to human development.  “Unlike the 9 months it takes for humans, chickens hatch in just 21 days. Plus, hens can lay eggs daily for a week, and the 21-day incubation only starts when the hen begins sitting on them. Amazing!”

So far, four chicks have found loving homes, and we have four more families ready to take in more. We hope the chicks from our classroom live long, happy lives!

VET Skills Week

Well done to all students who took part in our Makeup and Hair Competitions in mid August.

We are delighted to announce the winners for this year:

MAKEUP

First place: Tigist
Second place: Lillie
Special mention: Olivia

HAIR

First place: Eliza
Tied second: Caitlyn
Tied second: Amelia

All participants stepped up to the challenge and we applaud them on their awesome styling and creativity. Thank you to Deb Frost and Ingrid Dedman for judging, the amazing NC Foods department for catering, and our passionate VET teacher Sharon for running the show.

From the Library

It’s been a busy term in the College Library, with lots of new books coming in and several events for students and staff. In August, we celebrated Book Week the old fashioned way: with a costume day and a couple of competitions. Congratulations to costume prize winners Chloe, Green, Sally and Trae, and to competition winners Elham and Brayden.

In September, we hosted a creative writing workshop via Zoom with young adult author Simmone Howell. Students from the Extension English program at Kings Meadow High School joined our English Studio students for an inspiring and practical writing session. Year 12 student Freya said of the workshop: “It was beneficial to learn that writing books is a very long process, and that the age you manage to publish one doesn't diminish the accomplishment. I also thought the workshop was very interactive and interesting.” We look forward to sharing more such creative opportunities with students from our partner high schools.

We were also very pleased to have 10 students complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge. A focus on providing interesting and relevant reading material for students through our school library is part of the College’s commitment to supporting student literacy as part of the state-wide DECYP strategy on lifting literacy rates in our young people.

Careers Expo

Newstead College students and visiting school groups explored a variety of opportunities for their futures at the NC Careers Expo. With over 40 exhibitors from industry, government, education, and beyond, there was something for everyone! From hands-on demos to insightful conversations, the Newstead College gym, auditorium and gallery were buzzing with activity and excitement.

A massive thank you to all our exhibitors for making the day a great success.
